Analyses Multimedia and Interactive Tools

MMI is used as an abbreviation for Multimedia-Based and Interactive Tools

Multimedia allows the user to work with a variety of media types, such as text, computer graphics, audio, and video materials, as well as animation.

Interactivity means interaction with the content. Here is an example of a simple multimedia-based drag & drop activity.

Demo-Example: Drag & Drop

In the frame of the project, an analysis of available tools is performed and published in a critical report supporting trainers to use of suitable tools for their training.
The project team pays special attention to small adult education organizations that can neither afford generous advice nor expensive software.

Background of Multimedia Training

Multimedia-based and Interactive Training uses a combination of different methods that include:

  • Audio instructions
  • Videos and interactive videos
  • Written materials
  • Interactive material
  • Simulations

During learning, sensory stimuli activate synapses in the brain (Synapses are connections between various nerve cells). Information is passed from nerve cell to nerve cell via these connection points. The number of active synapses and nerve cells determines the success of learning. Multimedia and interactivity are more demanding on the brain, so synapses are formed more intensively and learning is more sustainable.

Synaps

In the nervous system, a synapse is a structure that permits a neuron (or nerve cell) to pass an electrical or chemical signal to another neuron or to the target effector cell.

Our Criteria for MMI

The project team selected the multimedia and interactive tools using these criteria:

  • The tool brings added value to training and the learning process of adults
All partners in this project promote active learning. This enables the creation of appealing courses with better learning results.
  • The basic version is available for free
The background is the fact that Adult Education organisations on the one hand are not continuously producing content and on the other hand that these organisations do not have such large budgets that the cost of the software is easily affordable.
  • The applications are easy to learn and use.
  • The applications can be easily integrated into common learning systems or websites. This should be true for WordPress in any case.

Identified applications

The project team identified these types of applications that enhance the learning process for adults while enabling active learning. Additionally, for the listed applications, free versions are available. An overview of these applications and examples demonstrating the use of these tools is available in the section “Multimedia Tools“.

  • Active presentations
  • Videos
  • Comics
  • Animations
  • Drag and Drop applications
  • Interactive applications (activities related to mouse clicks)
  • Crossword puzzles
  • Interactive videos
